Annapoorna Kini

Annapoorna Kini, M.D., is an American cardiologist and an Associate Professor of Cardiology at Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York City.

She is co-author (with Dr. Samin K. Sharma) of Coronary artherectomy: Contemporary concepts in cardiology and (with Dr. Valentin Fuster) of Definitions of acute coronary syndromes in Hurst's The Heart.[1]

She performs more coronary interventions annually than any other woman in the U.S.[2]

Biography

Kini was born in India and graduated from the Kasturba Medical College in Mangalore. After further studies in Wales, she became a member of the Royal College of Physicians of London.

She joined the staff at the Mount Sinai Hospital in 1996, undergoing further studies with Drs. Fuster and Sharma.[3][4]

Together with Sharma, in 1998 Kini started the Live Symposium of Complex Coronary Cases; she serves as its Co-Director.[5] Additionally, she is the Associate Director of the Mount Sinai Heart Cath lab and the Director of Mount Sinai's Interventional Cardiology Fellowship Program.

She performs over 800 coronary interventions annually with a complication rate of less than 0.5 percent.[2]

Education

Kini graduated from India's Vivekananda College in 1984. She received her MBBS from Kasturba Medical College in 1991, completing residencies at the University of Wales College of Medicine (in 1996) and Our Lady of Mercy Medical Center in the Bronx (in 1999). She completed three fellowships at Mount Sinai Medical Center – in 1997, 2001, and 2002, respectively.[6]

Awards and recognition

Dr. Kini is recipient of the Young Investigator Award of American Association of Cardiology of Indian Origin (AAICO) in 1999[7] and received First Place in Internal Medicine (Ophthalmology and Anatomy) from Mangalore University in 1989.
